Did you watch the Power Rangers reboot? Whatever your opinion of that movie was, it will probably be the same as this one. To me, the two movies are incredibly similar in tone and structure: ridiculous concepts that try to play it serious.
The script is the biggest letdown here. Much like the power rangers movie, instead of just trying to tell a fun and engaging story, they decided to lay the foundation for a new franchise. And much like that movie, this translates to one long training montage littered will dull exposition to hastily build a universe.
What's that rule about storytelling? Show don't tell? Just build a good story and let the universe emerge out of that. This movie is trying to be a "beginners guide" to mortal kombat when really it just needed a simple character story to get things moving.
Think "Iron Man". We only got a teaser for the wider universe at the end, the rest of it was just about Tony Stark. So, while some visuals were impressive, ultimately this is just a really dull movie.
I look forward to the next reboot.
