Review of Morning Glory (2010) by Palmer R — 27 Jun 2011

Yeah, I don't review romantic comedies much, and this one is deeply flawed, but it is one of the better ones out there.

The best part of the film is Rachel McAdams, who plays the main character, a gorgeous woman who is surprisingly bad with the opposite sex. The very first scene shows her in a flubbed blind date where the other guy gets so pissed off at her that he leaves while she's talking on the phone to her boss. The male characters in this movie are flat out funny because they are all created from a woman's perspective. As a guy, I couldn't stop laughing watching this guy's out right rejection of an extremely beautiful girl, since in the real world she would be doing far better with our gender.

The movie's plot is boring (beautiful AND talented woman saves a crappy news show by making it corny as hell), but McAdams has such a good character that you don't mind watching. Harrison Ford is the other really good actor in this movie, because he plays the complete reverse of what you would expect, a cranky old man. He pulled that in the fourth Indiana Jones movie, but he puts it into overdrive with a flat out hysterical guy who is such a bastard that he ends up being likable. The rest of the acting isn't bad, but the characters are, and as always, the male romantic lead (played by Patrick Wilson, who has crafted his "douchebag who is actually a nice guy" into a typecasted thing since he's done this in another movie, "The Switch") is so two dimensional you can't help but root against him. This movie survives on the hilarity of McAdams and Ford (for the guys, McAdams is also incredibly hot, as I have constantly mentioned in this review) and not much else. All of the characters but them could get killed and you wouldn't care. But to all the guys forced by their bitchy girlfriends to pick out a rom-com, this is one of the better options.
