Review of Moonstruck (1987) by Brendan N — 11 Nov 2018
You could be fooled to think this would be a simplistic romantic comedy but it is so much more. Cher should have stuck to acting as she shines in the lead role, one that might have fallen flat with any other actress.
Nicolas Cage is in highly intense form and has a lot of fun with the love interest role, you forget he has maintained the same over the top acting from the beginning. The film won't play for everyone, my partner could not get invested with this and left early one.
When you grow up with Woody Allen you can't help but enjoy a film like this. This is a film that has a funny script and a filmmaker with great depth at the helm. Jewison is one of the great dramatic filmmakers and you can see he was merely letting the script unfold, the end kitchen scene is something straight from a play.
One of the great comedies that struck gold at the awards, and deservedly so. 09/11/2018.
