Review of Moonraker (1979) by Kate P — 28 Jan 2013
(4 Stars) Moonraker is definitely a polarizing Bond movie; it's easy to say things go from silly to absurd simply by introducing space as a setting. But the Bond films are the most popular action movies of their time... they are transcendent of the times, so whatever is current, they'll make the Bond-version of it. The over-the-top xXx was popular, so they made an even more over-the-top Die Another Day. The gritty Bourne movies were hot, so they made the gritty Casino Royale. Moonraker was made after the popularity of space movies Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And like those movies, the special effects are pretty innovative for their time, even if parts of the plot felt ridiculous.
It has a very exciting opening skydiving scene that's just awesome; one of the most exciting openings to a Bond film ever. It also has some good chase scenes, funny moments, and cool gadgets. Even if I can kind of see why people don't enjoy this one as much as other Bond films, I really like Moonraker.
