Review of Moonraker (1979) by Taru H — 30 Aug 2009
Let?s start off at the beginning. The opening theme song was sung by Shirley Basey. She already sung a gem of an opening theme song in 1964 for Goldfinger. I guess she was so good she was asked to return 15 years later to do it again. Point Neutral.
Let?s go to the order the movie was released in. The Spy Who Loved Me posted For Your Eyes Only as the next James Bond film to appear in theaters in it?s closing credits. This movie much like it?s predecessor was mostly adapted from a screenplay and not Fleming?s original novel of the same name. It was rushed into production due only to the overwhelming success of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Both films were released in 1977. Just Like The Spy who Loved Me. The only difference was both films were creative and original and boasted fantastic Academy Award nominated themes by John Williams. (Star Wars won!).
This Bond adventure felt rushed and hurried. It featured the return of Jaws (Ricjhard Kiel) as the mostly silent henchman. It contained another unsubtle double entourge of a name in form of a female love interest name under the guise of Dr .Holly Goodhead. (Lois Chiles) Usually I applaud unsubtle names like Plenty and XXX, but in this case "yeach", how nauseating. Speaking of nauseating how about the main villain. Hugo Drax (Michael Lonsdale) how bland and boring was he.
The entire movie was bland and boring if you ask me the action sequences were sparse and sporadic. Very brief and never building up to any real climax. This entire move felt stolen or ripped of from the aforementioned Sci -Fi films just two years prevoius. If this is James Bond?s attempt at breaking new ground into diffearnt genres no thanks. I?ll stick with majorly cool spy movies for 600 please Alex. This movie puts the entire franchise into Jeopardy almost. Stick to you guns please ?Cubby? Broccoli and notice they don?t shoot lasers like in this dreaded adventure.
Speaking of dreaded. That?s just what I?ll give this waste of 2 hours and 6 minutes. A ?D?. This is 007s least succeful film in all the Moore outings.
Grade D.
