Review of Moonlight (2016) by Ted N — 26 Feb 2017
The tough life of a poor black gay kid, with the misfortune to grow up where there's no middle class to rescue him. They don't have a Dead Poets' Society at his deadbeat school. Nobody has ever taken him to a show; no inspiring teacher with That Special Insight has ever suggested that he read The Symposium.
Most gay coming of age movies resolve into these class cliches (but all struggle is class struggle, is it not?), and it is almost refreshing to to find one that clearly has no intention of doing so. Though, in the end, being trapped in this depressing drug-infested milieu (where the depth of field is very shallow and almost everything out of focus), our hero is doomed, it seems, to endure the longest dry spell in cinema history.
This triptych depicts life in a sexual desert - with very severe myopia to boot. Brilliant performances from all; though many will regret the lack of subtitles - best wait for the DVD.
