Review of Moon (2009) by Kyle G — 22 May 2012
Rivals Solaris as one of those few science fiction films to ask thoughtful, brilliant questions of its characters. After a lovely act one, with poignant yet hilarious setpieces (Kevin Spacey's baritone alongside stupid happy/sad/concerned emoticon displays; awkward drama between a man and one of his clones; and a whole slew of requisite nods to 2001), the story delves into a tough-minded analysis of an individual's mental health after being manipulated by a space corporation.
The tone ramps up at this point--and once in a while slips into surreal melodrama, though rarely--and it begins to very seriously peel away layer upon layer of psychological torment and expose it to a grueling sci-fi conscientiousness.
