The evaluation of the film may depend on the viewer's knowledge of FGM (female genital mutilation) in certain cultures. I think Sembene did a fantastic job showing that no one is really a villain in the practice of this harmful tradition.
They are simply practicing what they have been taught to be right....And that it is up to the villagers themselves to open up to new information, and choose to modify their culture for the better.
