Review of Monte Carlo (2011) by Steven D — 30 Jun 2011
Low key and predictable but rather charming. Two friends (Selena Gomez and Katie Cassidy) go to Paris on a very bad package tour accompanied by the unwelcome older stepsister of Gomez (Leighton Meester).
Gomez's character is mistaken for a rich, spoiled British socialite (also played by Gomez). Much confusion and many personal revelations follow. As more than half the critics have noted, the film never deviates from formula.
Nevertheless, the film is helped immensely by Leighton Meester's performance. Her character changes the most over the course of the film and changes most convincingly. It may not be something you want to pay full price for, but it is certainly a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
