Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Jack W — 22 May 2010
Refreshingly raw story that is at times extremely depressing and at others just downright suicidal. The characters are miserable and sad and they really have no redeeming qualities. Yet even with these two mitigating factors, the story is compelling and lucid and you eventually start pulling for the two main characters to pull through.
Every actor in the film gives a top notch performance, headlined by Halle Berry of course. What really struck me though in watching the film was the simplicity of the shots and cinematography and how still the director chose his camera style to be.
It was very nice to watch a film so still in composure. The film is slow and tedious at times but everything in it is done so well this never becomes an issue. Great watch.
