Review of Monster's Ball (2001) by Darin W — 15 Nov 2010
The more that I get to think over and over this movie, the more the I understand and most of all, enjoy it more than the first viewing. Actually, this is the first time that I've seen this film, and yet, I understand and enjoy it.
To expand that, I give you some things why this film is such a terrific, You know Halle Berry won an academy award for best actress for her role in this movie, well I think she deserves it a lot, also Billy Bob Thornton could have been also nominated for best actor but Washington won, but that's alright.
Anyways, the film does not expect to be something kinda like a romantic and dramatic movie but it is something about the life before and after each character's experiences in death of their love ones, their sons, yes sons.
Thornton plays Hank, he is a prison guard and a racist guy, meaning hates black people a lot, until one day where his son Sonny, played by Heath Ledger, shoots himself after they had an argument. Well then a few days later, he met Leticia, played powerfully by Halle Berry, it was actually a accidental meeting because he saw her at the road with his son fainted, so he picked them up and bring them to the hospital, but bad news, Leticia's son dies, so another shocking moment there to Hank.
Going back to the character of Leticia, as I said she has one son, and that kid is so fat that she always says âPiggyâ? to him. I think the turning point of this movie is that together they shared storied about losing of love ones and most of all sharing love as they want to get over with what happened to them.
I think this is a really strong and powerful movie with great performances overall, and I just don't care about the sex scenes but though I care about the dialogues and the change of attitudes of these character, meaning before they were so mean but then they become a lot different and they changed the look of another people especially black ones to each other.
I wanna say this one more time, Berry deserves her oscar and the film is overall great and I think it is one of the best films of 2001.
