Review of Monsters (2010) by Pascal S — 05 Nov 2012
So I watched this movie because I heard there was a new Godzilla flick in the works by the director. Thought I'd check out his first piece of work to pass the time till that comes to light. I'll be honest...I got absolutely nothing from this movie. It was a thinly veiled satire on U.S. border politics that wasn't even presented in a way that made me feel anything. I'm pro-open borders (if that even matters when rating a movie), so you'd think I'd at least feel something about the gigantic wall the U.S. constructed. The whole thing was just hokey and corny.
Going further beyond that, the characters never developed for me. Both of the main characters exist in this world where I never quite felt any sort of emotion towards them one way or the other. This is seemingly mirrored on screen when neither character seemed to really exhibit any feelings one way or the other about anything. Sure they were shocked at one point after the attack in the jungle, but beyond that....I'm supposed to believe these people actually cared about one another? I actually think the only characters in the movie that gave me any sense of the world in which they were at were the guys with guns in the jungle, and the one lady they stay with after departing the train.
So in short....terrible movie.
