Review of Monsters (2010) by Joel C — 08 Jul 2015
This is the alien movie that so many directors and producers have wanted to make.....almost!
The tension is often superb. The plot is well orchestrated. The scenery is staggering and the cinematography stunning...mainly due to its Mexican location and in part to a lot of guerilla film making. However, with such a good premise and decent performances it never really excels. It has a lot of heart and the accompanying soundtrack is soothing and haunting in equal measure. However, it ends abrubtly after promising so much and there is no real resolution for the lead characters or the visitors. Still I would watch again in a heart beat as it is so refreshing to see such common subject matter handled in such an original fashion. Fantastic to see independent film makers produce such a high standard on such a small budget. Especially with this type of genre.
Monsters is a sensitive look at the Earth and the potential of other lifeforms visiting our planet. It delivers a mature, well considered story on how we would eventually accommodate them in our world. Ultimately it is urging us to contemplate the universe within which we live and the message is somewhat conflicting yet poetic...
