Review of Monster House (2006) by Alex V — 23 Feb 2013
Every once in a while, it's nice to get away from all the "serious" adult flicks or ridiculous teen slasher movies and just be a kid again. "Monster House" affords just that opportunity.
Nearly all of us can remember the Grouchy Old Man or Wicked Witch of the block, owner of the one house no kid would dare approach. This cartoon tells the story of one such Grouch and the little boy who lived across the street from him.
Old Man Nebbercracker seems to be a particularly vicious codger, but the boy across the street, DJ, suspects there is something deeper and more sinister behind Nebbercracker"s behaviour. Dodging a snooty babysitter and her inept boyfriend, DJ teams up with his best friend to investigate. They discover that Nebbercracker's house is actually ALIVE, a "domus mactabalus" or malevolent structure possessed by the wayward soul of the angry dead.
The two boys save a young Girl Scout going door-to-door selling cookies, and together the children attempt to put an end to the House's reign of terror.
Again, this cartoon was good, simple fun. Sure, some characters were a bit underdeveloped and the script was shallow, but what do you expect in a kid's Halloween cartoon?
