Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Rob L — 05 Nov 2012
An outstanding performance packed full of charm from Mohamed Fellag distinguishes the Quebecois film beautifully shot in a Montreal school amid the snows of winter. An Algerian refugee, the hero is seen living a double life, combining his teaching duties with the process of claiming asylum.
We see snatches of the prickliness of this community's mindset, especially ijin the shape of some pretty horrendous parents and the petty rulebook of modern schooling also comes in for subtle criticism. Youngster Sophie Nelisse also prostars in a captivating role and the whole is a film that must rank among 2012's finest. Nelisse - remember the name.
