Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Nik M — 14 Dec 2012
Monsieur Lazhar was the kinda film that makes this year-end ritual worth while. I go into so many of these films knowing & expecting nothing, once in awhile it really pays off with gems like this, one of the warmest & most-touching films of the year.
Mohamed Fellag is terrific but Sophie Nelisse is a revelation, one of the best child performances I've seen in awhile. This is the kind of beauty through simplicity in filmmaking that some (The Dardennes' - Kid with a Bike, which I reviewed yesterday) lack.
Subtly and emotion shouldn't be exclusive. Beautiful film.
