Review of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953) by Tom M — 08 Jul 2007
Simply sublime.
A languid, poetic comedy, the sounds and the slapstick judged and timed to perfection. It all ends up rather wistfully - of course, they'll be back next year. Won't they...? The eternal joy and melancholy of summer seaside vacances...
I've even cited it in a recent song of mine! Appropriately enough, a song about Britain and France merging into one country - as could have happened in the mid-1950s...
Anyway, great film; more people should see it who would prefer comedy to be like fine wine, rather than an extra large soft drink.
