Review of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953) by Ian F — 26 Nov 2010
In hindsight, this far surpasses "Jour de Fete" by a long shot. I personally think it is the character of Mr. Hulot over Francouis (?) but the humour is also much funnier and smarter. Or to put all of this more eloquently:After seeing Jour de Fete, I didn't think that Tati could have gotten anymore charming, but more importantly, sophisticated in his humor. This film blew me away in the gags and more importantly, their set-up. I always wonder how it is done- how do directors, writers, actors (Tati was all three) see the joke, the gag, and how to set it up? How do they conceive something as funny and know it is? Additionally, and it was really evident here, how do they see the layout for a joke? Highly calculated yes, but how do you see the steps. Obviously not blessed with this gift, I admire people who do and this film is chock full of characters, especially Mr. Hulot, who seem to naturally do and be funny. It astounds me that people have that ability and that foresight.
A great movie!
