Review of Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) by Pat P — 19 May 2009
I liked it. Particularly the relationship between Temudgin and his wife Borte. The action seems added almost as an afterthought though - with little or no context to some of the fight scenes. There is a colossal gap in the story after he abandons Borte to follow his destiny to unite the warring clans.
One moment he is alone, having just escaped from prison and the next he is at the head of a massive army. There is no recruiting, no struggle to prove himself, no indication that he even has a small clan to get himself kick started in his empire building enterprise.
In fact we know from the story that the reason he was enslaved in the first place was beause his small army had been all but obliterated. Could have done with another hour that filled in all the plot holes.
