Review of Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) by Rune B — 14 Jul 2009
Hmm. why do I feel like I just watched "the notebook" with mongolian people? I really, really, really wish that the love story wasn't so central to the film. it was kind of like watching a really romanticized account of, say, hitler's early years.
admittedly, there were some great parts, it was beautifully shot, and the battle scenes were downright poetic, but it seemed like the producers forced a love story in there. the presentation of his childhood struggles, his fraternal rivalries, and his journey from bondage to domination of a large chunk of the world was compelling enough.
the film humanized genghis khan, which was fantastic. I just wish it hadn't turned him into goddamn romeo. this film had SO much potential to be awesome it makes me sad that I have to put it in the "close but no cigar" category.
