Review of Money Monster (2016) by Cath O — 08 Jun 2016
George Clooney and Julia Roberts star as a tv financial pundit and his producer whose show is interrupted by an angry young man with a gun one day, demanding answers after a financial recommendation went wrong and he lost all his savings.
What follows is a pretty tense thriller as the characters try to uncover the truth while the whole hostage situation plays out on live TV. Director Jodie Foster keeps the action moving swiftly along, aided by a sharp script.
Clooney and Roberts manage to have great natural chemistry even when most of their communicating is via microphones. A good support cast includes Brits Jack O'Connell as the young hostage taker, Dominic West as suitable slimy big business boss and Outlander's Caitriona Balfe getting to use her delightful native Irish accent as a PR exec.
Things do get rather unbelievable at times, but this is an engrossing thriller that doesn't out stay its welcome.
