Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Ben G — 12 Jul 2008
Child abuse is no laughing matter.
That is, however, until you see 'Mommie Dearest'! This is the funniest film i've seen all year!
Faye Dunaway's histrionic performance sits somewhere between Linda Blair in the Exorcist, Calculon in Futurama and a Disneyesque wicked Stepmother! One scene involving wire coathangers had me wondering (between fits of laughter of course!) if Faye Dunaway perhaps attempting to channel Batman villian the Joker.
This is one of those delicious so-bad-it's-brilliant films. Over the top, cheesy, horrible hammery (although I have to say, the actress who plays an adult Christina fared quite well, if only by keeping a straight face opposite Dunaway's misjudged performance) and voyeristic, 'Mommie Dearest' is more fun than a closet full of wire coathangers.
I swear, if you listen carefully while watching you might just hear Bette Davis chuckling alongside you from her grave.
