Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Victor L — 09 Mar 2008
:fresh: [color=#000000]Mommie Dearest was made with Oscar pretensions, that's why I think it was so criticized and won the Razzie for Worst Picture of the Year. I consider this is not the bad movie the critics of that time hated because it has a gripping story, shows an extremely temperamental and mentally ill actress (Joan Crawford) who is played with great efforts by Faye Dunaway, whose career as leading star didn't deserve to flop for this movie, she's an amazing actress, one of my favorite actresses ever.
The film's highs: the art direction, the costume design, the score composed by Henry Mancini, the performances of Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid and little Christina, the make-up. The film fails in rhytm, sometimes is heavy to watch because it seems the film loses the compass and there are some violent scenes where the director should have controlled Dunaway and little Christina to avoid overactings, anyway the film is not that good to win an Oscar but Razzies exaggerated, it's a fresh movie.
