Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Dee S — 30 Dec 2017
Wasn't aware of the true story or nature of the loosely adapted movie until a bit of web searching a couple days ago. Did not know what to expect but had doubts given what might sound like a weak subject. Starts out with mogul skiing Olympics freestyle trials as Molly Bloom is in a contest for a team spot but then has a terrible career ending fall. Of course her brother Jeremy was the top men's mogul skier at the time.
An entertaining film, the subject is delivered interestingly driven by its witty energetic screenplay. Early parts of the dialogue heavy movie are mostly her narratives until the film gets to the core subject of the film, her involvement in running high stakes poker games, windows into the world and characters of high stakes poker, her arrest, and trial. My favorite moments of the film were impressive rapid-fire dialogue between Bloom played by Jessica Chastain and her lawyer Idris Elba both delivering outstanding performances. The pace of the chaotic dialogue will overwhelm some in the audience unable to absorb coherently into likely boredom while others will enjoy experiencing such word play.
