Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Eric R — 07 Jan 2018
4/5 Stars.
I'm going with a slightly generous 4 stars.
The entire story was really interesting and engaging. While the movie is long, it keeps the pace going pretty well and never slows down too much. Jessica Chastain is a real powerhouse in the movie propelling the movie forward. I'd be totally cool with a Best Actress nomination for her for this role.
The opening sequences is intense -- it is like an 11 out of 10. If the movie had been able to carry that intensity through the whole way it would have been amazing, But it cools down from there.
Probably my biggest complaint about the movie is that it feels a little Pollyannish at times (it was directed by Sorkin) and tells the story that is most advantageous to Molly. Like there are several places where I wonder whether they told the truth or whether they were just making things look better for her.
On a side note if you are curious who her clients were, you can google "Who were Molly Bloom's clients" and ready a couple of stories that identify several of the Hollywood A-listers. It isn't clear if any of them are the people in the movie.
