Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Chiedu M — 12 Jan 2018
I'm a fan of Sorkin but I also acknowledge that his scripts can feel very wordy at times and it can sometimes break the illusion for me. I feel that he did a very good job of reeling that in throughout the duration of his directorial debut.
After about 15 minutes I was fully immersed in the fast-talking version of Los Angeles that Molly inhabited. I've read complaints about the second half of the film and I don't see that. The pace felt natural as far as mirroring the real world events it was based on.
I also disagree with the negative critiques of the psychology of this film. People often forget that when a film is conveying the perspective of one specific person, that everything 'lesson learned' is not to be taken as a universal truth, just as this one person's reality.
With that in mind, I thought the story was quite good. One gripe I had was with the editing. Some of the rapid fire cuts I felt came to soon or weren't earned by the shots they were showing. Anyway, I give this an "A-" / "B+".
