Review of Modern Times (1936) by Sv G — 05 Jan 2009
This as most have said is just a brilliant film that still stands on it's own all these years later. The social commentary being stated here through the comedic genius and direction of Charles Chaplin still applies just as strongly (if not more so) to today's society.
He most certainly was not only genius but a visionary. This is considered a silent film (though it is not completely so - but primarily) because "talkies" had already been out for over 7 years when this film was made in 1936.
But it was actually one of the most popular films that year. The sound he does use in this film is cleverly used and always to make a point. A fantastic and enjoyable film that is an essential to see.
