Review of Modern Times (1936) by Bryce H — 30 Jun 2012
Modern Times is directed by the great Charlie Chaplin and I'm sad to say that this is my first Chaplin experience. I'm not sure why I never watched any of his films until now, but I'm sure glad I watched Modern Times. This film is perfect for being made in the 30s and how enjoyable it is watching it now is amazing. Modern Times is less of a silent film than a lot of Chaplin's other works. There are some sound effects and very little dialogue that is heard. Most of the main dialogue is written on screen. Chaplin's directing is a work of art that is timeless.
Charlie Chaplin is also the screenwriter of Modern Times. This film deals with unemployment and how everyone relies on factory work. I was taken by surprise how many times I laughed during this film. Modern Times is hilarious and the fact that it's from the 30s and is still comedic now is brilliant. There a really funny parts in this film like the feeding machine and the situations Chaplin's character puts himself into. Modern Times is ahead of its time story-wise and is great entertainment.
Charlie Chaplin is the lead actor in Modern Times. His performance is very charismatic and you can't help to fall in love with it. Chaplin is always putting a smile on your face throughout this film, which perfect because it sucks you into the film even more. His performance really carries the film and makes you wanting more.
Modern Times is a timeless from the 30s and it'll be making my list of favorite comedies. Highly recommended for those who respect old cinema.
