Review of Modern Times (1936) by Rory P — 25 Aug 2012
The essential thrust of the film remains incredibly relevant and some of the jokes are funny in ways that could only be described as beautiful. Plus (sorry for the bias here) Paulett Goddard is stunning to look at.
But there is a burden in the watching of the film - Some of the sketches are not as grabbing (one or two even left me cold, I was actually urging the film to get on with it on these occasions.).
This, mixed with perhaps the biggest burden - the film episodic nature - lowers it from masterpiece status, for me.
Still worth a look though.
