Review of Mitchell (1975) by Kerry F — 07 Mar 2010
Watching the MST3K version of this film, one gets the feeling that Joe Don Baker was NOT acting in his portrayal of this film's eponymous anti-hero. He IS Mitchell, the same way that Mickey Rourke WAS RamJam in "The Wrestler.
" Think of Mitchell as a 1970s version of either a Jimmy McNulty or Gregory House -- he's a nasty, unkempt slob who disregards certain social (and legal) niceties while somehow managing to do his job very well (he nabs the bad guys in this film, for example).
Unfortunately, this movie is of MUCH lower quality than either "The Wire" or "House, MD" so my comparisons admittedly only go so far. The MST3K episode ripping into "Mitchell" is justly famous (and arguably one of that show's best episodes), in no small part because the movie and Baker give them so much material to work with.
