Review of Mistress America (2015) by Amanda C — 04 Nov 2015
We so rarely get to see less than perfect women onscreen, but Mistress America is full of them and that's a great thing. They are self centred and messy, trying to make their way through the world, get what they want, and not be a terrible person in the process.
Greta Gerwig is all you could ever want in a lead. She manages to tap into an effortless cool that is anything but, and creates a character that is insufferable, but facinating because you can't help but be drawn to her.
Lola Kirke's Tracy is everything that Brooke isn't, insecure, but with some actual talent and follow through. Together they embody the duel that real women are constatly undergoing, trying to be happy, successful, desirable, but also doing it on their own terms and trying to have something to truly offer.
Mistress America defies the little boxes women are so often forced into, especially on screen, by simply letting its characters be awful and make mistakes, which is what makes they so endearing.
