Review of Mister Roberts (1955) by Mya G — 13 Mar 2010
A must-have for any WWII movie collection, this thoughtful comedy explores the side of war so very rarely seen by the movie-going public. Based on naval officer Thomas Heggen's semi-autobiographic novel, it perfectly recreates the sheer, unrelenting tedium of a supply ship so far away from the front line it might as well be on another planet.
Fonda, Cagney, Lemmon and Powell all turn in fantastic performances in this simultaneously funny and poignant film. Easily one of my perennial favourites.
