Review of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) by Chris B — 21 Dec 2015
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation had big shoes to fill following Ghost Protocol, but it easily stepped up, with excellent set pieces and plenty of action. This isn't a step forward for the series as the past film was, but more of a continuation.
This is by no means a bad thing. The formula doesn't feel tired yet, and with plenty of twists, great betrayals and character moments, I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. The movie does have some shortcomings, however.
The villain is a caricature, and I frankly didn't find him very threatening. We don't get the sense of scope that previous M:I films have provided, so the stakes don't feel as high. With that said, the script is great, with lots of funny quips, as well as a new character, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who feels right at home in the ensemble.
If you haven't already, check this one out for a quick witted action film that is a feast on the eyes, as well as an intelligent take on the well worn spy genre. 4 out of 5 stars.
