Review of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) by Matthew C — 22 Oct 2017
Mission Accomplished.
Tom Cruise does it again as this franchise, which is now on its fifth installment, keeps on topping itself over and over again. With gripping dialogue, great performances, clever storytelling, and the perfect team, this franchise always keeps the audience guessing.
Rogue Nation is the best film in the franchise and it is the reason why my favorite series in the spy genre is Mission: Impossible. It is amazing that once the movie kicks off it starts off at a high note, but manages to get better as time goes on. This is a smart movie and one of the only movies I've seen this year that keeps me thinking as the plan unfolds.
One thing I loved about this movie was its editing and pacing which is the best for the franchise so far. Another thing I liked was the direction but it doesn't match the quality of the previous installment in this department. The action set pieces topped Ghost Protocol overall due to the great tension in each one.
The cast is perfect. They finally have a team that is fully developed and a welcome presence. Pegg obviously shines as Benji, As well as everyone else in their roles. Ferguson was amazing in her role and is definitely the best woman in the franchise.
On a negative note the amount of double crosses could be exhausting considering they are so many good twists. Another problem is that they under utilized Luther which I was hoping to get more screen time.
Overall Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is one of the best films I've seen this year. It's funny, has tension, great characters, a good villain and all around great time.
Rating: 8.3 (A-).
