Review of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) by Drauchdoes2015 — 30 Jul 2015
It was solid, fleetingly intelligent entertainment fodder. Cruise is still kicking, old as he is the guy's stamina is undeniable. I view this franchise as decent on the whole. There's a weird, escalating liveliness to each sequel that is surprising.
Still, the mission is always revealed to be quite possible and, though the stakes are more and more considerable with each entry, there is no risk or tension simply because killing Ethan Hunt and his team is the real Impossible Mission.
The stunt choreography in this one, though, sheesh, it's pretty crazy. Mad Max: Fury Road still takes the cake for me as the best display of action stuntwork I've seen this year (and maybe my whole life), but there are some memorable, delirious set pieces to bask upon here.
The whole cast functions fine, though I think Renner and Baldwin have been given the most mundane material, disappointingly. New addition Ferguson is really cool. She's way too sexualized and is giving only fleeting backstory, but aside from that, she is easily the most nuanced and human thing about this movie.
It's ludicrous, it's all staged, but dammit, I enjoyed myself. It's a winking (and often quite funny), adrenaline fueled action movie, filmed with taste and grace, performed as well as one of these blockbuster behemoths can be, and all-in-all is worth, at the very least, your attendance.
