Review of Mission: Impossible II (2000) by Aziz A — 21 Apr 2012
Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity or drive to see this movie around the time of its release. Watching it for the first time in 2012 did not help this film's rating. I found myself extremely annoyed by the numerous "John Woo slow motion scenes." I understand that he wanted to craft a specific vision for this movie and its obvious that he cares about how scenes are framed and shot, but that doesn't help me enjoy the movie. The stunts were ludicrous and the "relationship" between Cruise and Newton was paper thin.
Spoiler ahead (for anyone who's lucky enough to still not have seen this movie).
On a side note, I'd like to address how overused the masks were in this movie. I understand that each Mission: Impossible movie must somehow address the usage of a mask, but this was just over the top. Toward the end, there is an event that takes place that (I'm assuming) was supposed to cause great suspense in the audience - yet that suspense is never fully realized because I ALREADY KNEW THAT THE SCENE WAS A SETUP BECAUSE I AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED IT WAS ANOTHER STUPID, OVER-USED "GUY IN A MASK" SCENE. Guess what, I was right.
Dumb. Brainless. I'll never watch it again and I'm almost annoyed I wasted my time.
