Review of Mission: Impossible (1996) by David G — 28 Jun 2011

An intelligent action thriller that values the importance of engaging the mind as well as the adrenal glands - a smart move when producing a modern adaptation of a somewhat campy 60's TV show. Action sequences are very cool with a bewildering array of gadgets and equipment servicing the crazy stunts and set pieces, but they never overshadow the story and characters which are the heart and soul of the film. It's a complicated story, perhaps too complicated, but it's enjoyable to follow and full of interesting twists and turns. Tom Cruise takes on the role of spy maestro Ethan Hunt and his enthusiasm and charisma really bring the character to life. Joining the Cruiser are Jon Voight, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Redgrave, Jean Reno and a whole host of others who collectively make up an excellent cast.

Mission: Impossible could easily have been a disaster but thankfully the right decisions were made and the result is a fantastic action thriller that kicked off a hugely successful franchise.
