Review of Miss Sloane (2016) by Frank C — 12 Mar 2017
It feels like forever since I have seen Jessica Chastain in a starring turn in a drama or thriller. However, after a memorable dalliance with sci-fi (Interstellar and The Martian), she's back, and she's badder than ever.
Chastain's character heavily evokes her character of Maya from Zero Dark Thirty: a ruthless, tough as nails boss bitch. The emotions and habits are all too familiar, which is part of the reason she delivers such a confident performance in Miss Sloane.
Behind that performance is somewhat weaker material, feeling like a melange of Casino Jack, Scandal, and House of Cards. However, the pacing is quick and the buildup intense, making for a compelling watch that does make viewers think for a beat about the political message at play, heavy-handed though it may be at times.
