Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Michael H — 11 Oct 2016
Not Burton's best, but pretty good. I both agree and disagree with those who complain about the movie's change in tone. It was not just a problem in the film. The same was true as the action elements engaged in the novels.
But it is undeniable that Burton does have the ability to establish the film's emotional core as he handles with aplomb the introduction of Miss Peregrine and the children, as well as the budding attraction of Emma and Jake.
If anything, Burton may have been too attached to the novel's pacing, which is certainly aimed at a young adult's attention span. I'm hopeful the film does well enough to allow the series to be produced.
Jake and Emma's story, and the much broader story that develops in the novels, deserves to be told.
