Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Matthew F. J — 17 Oct 2016
Tim Burton is an excellent film director who's most recent work wasn't always as compelling as his previous series of 'macabre' inspired pieces for which his dark style is mostly known.
This new film is surprisingly entertaining without having the issue Alice In Wonderland suffered much from: avalanche of CGI. With this film , Burton seems to revisit his own classics and reincorporate some stop motion effects here and there, adds a touch of oddity with the costumes and the characters, but above all, he is working with a great story that will undoubtedly finds its audience in theaters or streaming.
Sure it's a modern film , close to the X-Men universe in a way (special children , with special powers, in a special house...) but it will surprises you with its charm and incredible ease to swing back from dark to funny in a heartbeat.
Mr. Burton, you have made a film that feels good and looks pretty great too. It may not be of Edward Scissorhands's grandeur, but it definitely is a fun ride to hop on.
