Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Simon T — 23 Apr 2017
All the virtues and vices of Tim Burton's career are on exhausting display here: a tendency to concentrate on interesting visuals at the expense of a coherent plot; an indulgent running time; and the growing feeling that he is making the same film again.
It's a pity, because the first twenty minutes are intriguing, and he's assembled an interesting and quirky cast. If only Burton would ally his celebrated visual skill to a thorough and intelligent adult script, not just endless variations on Edward Scissorhands.
