Review of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) by Facebook U — 24 Jun 2017
Occasional visual gags and effects reminded me of classic Tim Burton, and those were what made it a tolerable film. But the overall package is an absolute mess. The editing is terrible, both cut to cut and scene to scene, the performances were plain bad, and the story was so poorly structured and held together that it became laughable. It's hard to believe an actual Hollywood studio and some professional talent were behind the making of this. Plot points are introduced just to be forgotten five minutes later, and there's no tension whatsoever because the order in which drama unfolds is completely jumbled. I'm a big advocate for unconventional filmmaking, but the way this film breaks rules doesn't make it artsy, it makes it messy. I've loved a lot of Tim Burton's past work and the fact that he directed this just makes me sad. "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" is a very disappointing film.
Side note: There can never be enough films with Chris O'Dowd in them. But let's please give him better roles than this.
