Review of Miss Congeniality (2000) by B M — 10 Apr 2010
I am so disappointed in Ms. Bullock. In life, she appears to be a beautiful, serious, driven, and accomplished woman who works hard - the woman she portrays in this film has only two of these characteristics, if that. Her character is one-sided, narrow-minded and shallow, who doesn't put forth her best effort into playing her assigned cover. Every attempt by Michael Caine's character at giving her grace, elegance and talent (yes, I mean the "self defense" portion at the end, too: why did no one in the audience mind that her assistant seems to be in genuine pain?) seems to bounce off her transformed, silky, hair-laden head. I cannot stand watching her push away the people around her who are trying to help.
The plot is the second biggest disappointment. It was confusing and overly detailed: why do we need to know about Miss Rhodes Island's history? It doesn't help the plot, any more than the entire scene with the pizza at the paint bar. If the plot becomes slightly more understandable after the second viewing, let me know - I don't think I could bear watching this one over again.
In this film's favor? Benjamin Bratt. His character doesn't have much depth, but he did well with what little he was given. I also give kudos to Michael Caine. He gives this film some class that it desperately needs, even though his presence doesn't give it quite the transformation it requires.
This beauty pageant is over, and this film didn't even make it to the finals.
