Review of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) by Mattias E — 14 May 2009
Any attempt at adapting Yukio Mishima's works on the screen greatly runs the risk of turning into overburdened melodrama. Schrader avoids this by super-stylizing three of the sensei's novels almost into noh-plays and seamlessly weaving them into two additional narratives in this beautifully arranged biopic, focusing on Mishima's final day and his last act of beauty/violence.
