Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Maclud M — 04 Jul 2009
Very imaginative and well written, but there are elements holding it back.
The sepia tone used for the Light Kingdom looked awful. So did some of the creatures. It was 50/50, some creatures looked amazing and other looked terrible, such as the Sphinxes.
The Dark Queen and her kingdom were absolutely perfect. Everything was just so creepy and well animated.
They tried to generate entire sets with CGI, but at times it looked bad, in comparison to the live actress they used. They should have brought in some real props to help blend it in.
The acting is decent, but the pacing is off. The start of the film seems very slow, but ends up getting very exciting.
One thing I did not understand was the Stone Giants. I thought the Dark Queen would possess them and make them chase after the protagonist and her friend. She does not.
But then later on, she possesses these weird creatures to try and grab Helena and Valentine. I thought it was a wasted opportunity.
Overall, very good if you like fantasy films, if a bit off at times.
