Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Michael G — 28 Apr 2009
A modern Labyrinth, with Neil Gaiman's story and Dave McKean's vision to drive it. Need I say more?
Well, I suppose if you insist. I will admit that it is a very slow-paced movie. I would not be surprised to hear that this is popular amongst stoners. But if you can get the concept of the modern film out of your head, with the usual fast paced action for the attention-deficient audience, the story and visuals are something truly amazing to behold.
The majority of the story takes place in what is, nominally, a dream. And unlike most dream sequences you could name, you actually a very real sense of dreaming. Not everything makes sense, unless you think about it with a sort of dream-logic. Think about your own dreams. Then think about this movie.
Makes a fuck of a lot more sense, don't it.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, and you enjoyed virtually any movie the Jim Henson Company worked on [Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal leap immediately to mind] then you're bound to enjoy this. Sit back, relax and let yourself dream.
