Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Tom F — 25 Mar 2009
The creativeness and spirit of the girl in the film is inspiring. A very clever take on a girl coming of age, the separation from the mother, and her challenge of keeping that creative child part into adolescence and adulthood.
The film nicely captures too that abject nature of the unconscious mind and dreamscape. Reminds me of Coraline and Pan's Labryinth for their themes and clever use of the creative. This is one of those films that makes use of CGI to deepen meaning to the film, unlike the action genre which seems to use CGI because they can.
Visually very beautiful and striking. Metaphorically the combination of human actors and CGI also represents the seeming physicality of the human mind and the odd inexpicable world of the unconscious.
