Review of Miracle on 34th Street (1994) by Russell F — 09 Dec 2011
This remake of the 1947 Christmas classic is a part of what I call the stupid children's comedies of the 1990s. Think of 'Flubber', 'Baby's Day Out' or 'Beethoven'. They're all fun and have a strong flavour about them that can only be described as 1990s.
They're also very stupid. 'Miracle on 34th Street' treads that fine line between stupid and heartwarming. It's moreso heartwarming thanks to its inspirational script and lovable characters including Mara Wilson as the six year old girl who doesn't believe in Santa, and Richard Attenborough as the department store Santa who claims to be the real thing! Both give inspired performances which the audiences care about.
Dylan McDermott is also good as the lawyer of Kriss Kringle and perfect love interest to Dorey (Elizabeth Perkins). The script, although inspiring and heartwarming is a little stupid due to some ridiculous circumstances like a chance wedding, but otherwise this is a Christmas gem of the 1990s.
