Review of Million Dollar Arm (2014) by Matthew G — 18 Feb 2015
I have to admit that I pulled out all of my Baseball America Prospect Handbooks starting from 2008 to see what I could find on Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel. Flipping straight to the Pirates in the 2008 edition garnered nothing. 2009, again nothing. 2010? Nope. So, I went to the Internet...
This is a beautiful story about a sports agent JB Bernstein having the Hollywood theme of just missing out on representing the big player and having to think outside of the box to make something happen for his business. So he goes outside of the country to an untapped market in India to recruit a pitcher or two.
The story doesn't have big surprises, but it follows suit with what would or did actually happen. The acting was very strong all the way around. The direction and writing were a little sub pay for me as some of the dialogue could have had a greater impact and connection with the audience. There were some predictable moments throughout, but it was a fun ride. Hey, it's baseball.
My trip to through the Internet world landed a feeling of disappointment. Although both of these guys played professional baseball, neither of them made it above the AA level. I truly wanted to watch this guys pitch for the big club. Thankfully, the end of the movie tells us that JB sir has continued the Million Dollar Arm program. Hopefully one day we will see them with a big league club.
3 out of 5 stars.
