Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Jason D — 02 Feb 2009
What could be better than a Coens movie set in 1920s gangsterland? Actually quite a lot. Albert Finney controls the town? Give me a break. And i'm supposed to be convinced by his pyjama machine-gun bedroom antics? Right from the off this films lacks authenticity and grinds down in turgid dialogue and dull, unconvincing characters.
Even the violence looks like play acting and the art direction fails to set the period convincingly - often relying on claustrophobic studio sets. This is one genre the Coens simply do not have a handle on.
Disappointing.
